Nothing to lose: German coach warns of ‘intense’ Cameroon threat

Joachim Low has warned his Germany team that Cameroon represent dangerous opposition as they look to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.
Germany needs just a point from the encounter in Sochi, but Cameroon are still alive too and can advance if they win by two clear goals.

“Cameroon have nothing left to lose,” Low said in a press conference on Saturday. “They can only advance if they win. Tomorrow will be one of the most challenging and physically intensive games. No other team in this tournament would want to face Cameroon one on one.
“When you see how fast they play, what pace they have in their players in attack. This mixture is not seen often. They are so persistent and fast.”
In a bid to counter that pace, Low revealed he plans to restore Roma defender Antonio Rudiger to his back four.

“I had already planned this because Cameroon has such crazy quick players,” he said. “These are also Rudiger’s strengths with his strength and his speed.”
That will be one of a number of changes, although Low cautioned against wholesale alterations to his starting eleven with qualification not yet secure.
“I cannot change too much,” he said. “I cannot swap seven or eight because the basic structure must remain. But four or five changes are conceivable.”

Low has never failed to reach the semi-finals of a major tournament since taking charge of Germany.
They can top the group by bettering Chile’s result against Australia in the other Group B match on Sunday.
Cameroon have never beaten Germany in their previous three meetings, but might take heart from knowing that the last time they faced the reigning world champions – playing Brazil in 2003 – they won 1-0.
