48 team world cup: Good news for Africa?


For the 3rd time in its history, the world football governing body FIFA has increased the number of participating teams at the finals of the world biggest sporting fiesta despite critics arguing that will reduce the quality of the game.

The decision which was one of Giani Infantino’s campaign promises as he vied for the FIFA top job was announced on tweeter today that it has been unanimously approve buy the FIFA council

The FIFA boss argued that an 8 team competition will bring more money to the organization and has also received support from some football great like Argentine Maradona and Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o

Winners Africa is going to be one of the bigger winners as the continent which has more teams than Europe’s UEFA, send 5 teams to the tournament as compared to Europe’s 13.It is reported that the number of teams from Africa will almost double in the new formats and Asia is also likely to see their number of teams rise significantly in the new format.

The team started as a 13 team competition in 1930 in Uruguay, extended to 24 teams in 19892 and finally to 32 teams when France hosted and took the trophy in 19998
